eCow has a track record of designing and building bespoke instrumentation for monitoring various parameters of cow health. The electrohysterogram for detecting contractions as shown in the picture below used electrodes attached to the skin beneath the belt to register the electrical signals from the muscle contractions of the uterus. From these the successful progress of calving could be determined.

a black and white cow wears a red belt over her pin bones and under the udder. The cow is in a pen with straw and looks ready to calve.

This piece of instrumentation has the potential to diagnose hypocalcaemia.

Pulse oximeter ear tag

The heart rate of animals is a major potential indicator of stress and can be monitored by detecting blood pulses under the skin. We designed a system that could be implemented as an ear tag. The review of its potential is too large to put on this site, contact toby@ecow.co.uk for a copy.
